Our river safaris are all enjoyed under the guidance and supervision of our experienced
and qualified instructors. We aim to provide you with a good mix of fun and coaching.
If you have never paddled before we'll introduce you to the world of river kayaking
and help you to enjoy your first experience. Or if you have some previous experience
we offer advice and coaching to improve your technique, knowledge and skills. Above
all we want you to enjoy the beautiful River Stour and have some fun! We will discuss
your requirements at the time of booking and do our best to provide the best possible
experience.
You will be paddling one of our Ocean Frenzy sit-on-top kayaks which are an ideal
boat for beginners or novice paddlers as they are very stable. These kayaks are
designed for you to sit on rather than in and we have both single and double seat
versions.
Please note that the minimum age allowable for kayaking with River Stour Safaris
is 8 years old.
Our main access and kayak launch site on the River Stour is from the Mill Field in
Sturminster Newton. Car parking is available in the Recreation Ground car park at
the end of Ricketts Lane. From here there is a short walk to the far left corner
of the playing field and through the gate into the Mill Field. Please see the map
on the contact page.
We provide all safety kit - including buoyancy aids, helmets* and cagoules.
You will need to provide ..
• clothing that you don’t mind getting wet or muddy
• a change of clothes (please note that, other than a few
trees, we do not have changing facilities so participants
need to arrive suitably dressed!)
• a towel
• something to eat and drink
You will also need your own footwear – can be trainers, ‘Croc’ style shoes, sandals
or wetsuit boots if you have them. For safety reasons no-one will be permitted to
paddle barefoot.
*please note that it is our policy that all participants who have yet to achieve
BCU 1 Star or Paddlepower Passport awards are required to wear a helmet.
Fifty Plus Paddling
Our ‘Fifty Plus Paddlers’ session runs most Wednesdays, 1.30pm-3pm starting from
and returning to the Recreation Ground, Ricketts Lane. This session is for those
aged 50 years and over who wish to enjoy the tranquillity of drifting along with
the gentle current on a sit-on-top kayak. These are very stable boats which are ideal
for beginners or those who want to build their confidence on the water. There’s plenty
of wildlife to be seen in and around the Stour as well as local landmarks such as
the old Somerset & Dorset railway, Thomas Hardy’s riverside residence and three mills;
Sturminster Mill, Cutt Mill and Fiddleford Mill. It’s a great way to keep active
and meet new people, too!
Sessions are £8 per person and advance booking is required.
